Three-story Stone Pagoda in Seonghwang-ri, Uiryeong

This three-story stone pagoda stands in a village known as "Tapgol" (Pagoda Valley). Nothing is known of the name or history of the temple that once occupied the site, but according to a story handed down in the village, a temple built here in the Silla period was at some point destroyed by fire. The pagoda consists of a two-tiered base supporting a three-story body, though the body stone of the third storey is now missing. The lower tier of the base is simply made from a single stone, while the upper tier is assembled from several flat stones, with pillar shapes carved at the corners and centre of each face. The body of the pagoda, considerably narrower than the base, has pillar shapes carved at the corners of each storey's body stone. The roof stones are not especially wide in relation to the body stones but convey a sense of stability, with eaves that run horizontal before curving up slightly at the four corners. Compact yet stable in appearance, and with its lower base simplified to a single stone, the pagoda is presumed to be a work of the late Unified Silla period.
