Geungnakgupumdo Painting of Jijangsa Temple
지장사 극락구품도 · 地藏寺 極樂九品圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis painting depicts the nine grades of rebirth in Geungnak, the Pure Land, corresponding to the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth of the sixteen contemplations described in the Sutra of Contemplation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life. It was painted from the same original composition as the Geungnakgupumdo kept at Yeomburam Hermitage of Donghwasa Temple. Painted in colour on silk, it measures 170.8 cm across and 166.3 cm high. Although the facial features are rendered somewhat delicately, the painting is a fine example of the distinctive type of Geungnakgupumdo produced in the late Joseon period, and its use of shading, the contrast between red and green, and its elaborate floral patterns all reflect the Buddhist painting style of the nineteenth century.
