A gyoji was a document by which the king informed a subject of certain facts or orders. This gyoji, issued in 1438, the twentieth year of King Sejong of Joseon, announces that Bak Jung-sin (1390–?) had passed the regular triennial civil service examination (singnyeonsi mungwa). It has been kept in the house of his descendants, eighteen generations on. Bak Jung-sin was from Gangneung. After passing the civil examination in the twentieth year of King Sejong's reign, he served as magistrate of Yeongheung. He later returned to his hometown to care for his parents, and was noted for good deeds such as rebuilding the Gangneung hyanggyo (local Confucian school). The document is made of mulberry-bark paper and measures 64cm wide and 78cm long. Its text runs to four lines of thirty-four characters in all. The last line gives the date as "the seventeenth day of the fourth month of the third year of Jeongtong", above which is stamped the royal seal reading 'Gukwangsinbo'.
