This is a facility built during the Joseon dynasty to give temporary lodging to officials sent from the central government or to envoys arriving from abroad. The main hall was repaired in 1983, and documents discovered at that time record that it was newly built in 1655, the sixth year of King Hyojong, and repaired in 1803, the third year of King Sunjo, where it is recorded as the Insan Guest House — showing that it is not, as previously thought, the dongheon (the main office hall of a local government) of the Hoein Guest House. The typical layout for such a guest house has rooms to the left and right of the main hall, with an inner gate, an outer gate and a wing corridor in front. At this site, however, only the main hall and outer gate survive. The main hall measures eight bays across the front and two bays in depth; its central three bays all have umulmaru flooring (wooden boards laid in a well-shaped grid pattern), and two-bay rooms are set to either side, connected to the central floor. Judging by its overall construction technique, the Hoein Insan Guest House is a building that displays the characteristic features of the late Joseon period.
