고산향교대성전 · 高山鄕校大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a local educational institution established by the state to enshrine the spirit tablets of sages and hold memorial rites in their honour, and to educate the local populace. The date of its original construction is unknown, but it is presumed to have been built at its present site in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo. It burned down and was rebuilt in 1400, the second year of King Jeongjong, and after burning again during the Japanese invasions of 1592, it was repaired repeatedly to reach its present form. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall (the lecture hall), the east and west dormitories, and the inner three-bay gate. Daeseongjeon, the central building of the ritual space, has three bays across the front and three along the side, with a gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character in (人). Inside, alongside the central spirit tablet of Confucius, inscribed "Daeseong Jiseong Munseon Wang" (the Great, Ultimate Sage and Culture-Propagating King), sages of China are also enshrined. The portrait of Confucius is said to have been brought from a work by a Tang-dynasty Chinese painter during the mid-Joseon period. Memorial rites are held twice a year, in spring and autumn.
