Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting depicts Ksitigarbha (Jijang bosal, the bodhisattva who vows to save beings from hell) together with the Ten Kings of the underworld. It is painted in colour on silk, measuring 182.5 cm in width and 173 cm in height. The attendant figures are arranged neatly in tiers, and the images of Ksitigarbha and the Ten Kings grow smaller toward the top of the painting, achieving a fine perspectival effect. The serene, rounded forms of the figures reflect the style of the late 18th century, while the halo rendered in five-coloured rays, the stylised heavenly robes, and the monotonous clouds show the Buddhist painting style of the 19th century. It was made in 1893, the thirtieth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon; although the colours have faded considerably overall, some areas of red and green remain relatively bright.
