Seated Wonju Heungyang-ri Rock-carved Buddha
원주흥양리마애불좌상 · 原州興陽里磨崖佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCarved into a rock face 30m northwest of the main path to Ipseoksa Temple on Chiaksan Mountain in Wonju, Gangwon State. The Buddha's face is carved in high relief while the body is rendered in low relief. Although a diagonal crack runs across the figure, it is well preserved overall. The head is covered with small snail-shell curls, the face is full, and the eyes, nose and mouth are well proportioned throughout. The robe draped over both shoulders is somewhat thick, with simplified folds. The right hand is raised to shoulder height with the palm facing outward, while the left hand rests in front of the abdomen with the palm turned upward. The figure sits with both feet placed upon the knees, soles turned skyward, and the knees are set relatively wide, giving a sense of stability. Around the body are a round halo behind the head and an oval halo around the body, and beneath is a pedestal carved with a double layer of lotus petals. About nine characters are inscribed on the lower left of the pedestal, but they are too weathered to read. Judging from its style, the Buddha is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
