Daeungjeon Hall Guardian Deities Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A Buddhist painting kept in the Daeungjeon Hall of Jijangsa Temple, depicting Sinjung, indigenous folk deities of India that were absorbed into Buddhism as guardian spirits. It is painted in colour, chiefly red, green and brown, on a silk ground, and measures 198cm wide and 149cm long. The composition centres on Cheollyong (a dragon-king guardian deity), Brahma and Indra, surrounded by a relatively large retinue of attendant figures; the symmetrical layout, together with the inverted-triangle arrangement formed by Cheollyong and Indra, gives the composition a somewhat complex structure. Especially fine is the varied portrayal of heavenly maidens playing more than twenty kinds of musical instruments. The disproportionate rendering of the human body and the exaggerated depiction of the faces are characteristic of nineteenth-century Buddhist paintings. Although the colours have faded, the harmonious colour composition still lends the painting its dignity.
