Standing Mangje-dong Stone Buddha
망제동석불입상 · 望帝洞石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a standing stone Buddha statue located in Mangje-dong, Jeongeup, in Jeollabuk-do. It wears on its head a wide-brimmed hat resembling a gat, the traditional Korean horsehair hat, showing that Confucian elements have been incorporated into the sculpture. The shoulders are somewhat hunched, and beneath the chin the drapery folds form a U-shape. Below the abdomen the drapery folds take a V-shape, and beneath the wrists three parallel lines run downward. The right hand is raised to shoulder height with the palm facing outward and the fingertips pointing upward, while the left hand likewise shows its palm, but with the fingertips pointing toward the ground. The statue concentrates its craftsmanship on the rendering of the face and hands, giving it a distinctly folk character.
