Hyeonwang Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting, preserved in the Daeungjeon Hall of Jijangsa Temple, depicts the judgement scene of King Yeomna, the underworld king who judges the dead. Painted in colour on silk, it sets the scene of the king's judgement within a round composition; the king's dignified build and finely detailed facial features show a relatively archaic style. Made in 1893, the thirtieth year of King Gojong of Joseon, the painting depicts faces and robe folds in a uniform manner and renders the floral patterns and clouds in flat, single colours, faithfully reflecting the trend seen in Buddhist paintings of the late nineteenth century.
