Standing Wonju Maeji-ri Stone Bodhisattva
원주매지리석조보살입상 · 原州梅芝里石造菩薩立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis image stands atop Geobuk (Tortoise) Island, in the middle of a reservoir in front of the Wonju Campus of Yonsei University, in Maeji-ri, Heungeop-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon State. It is said to have originally stood on a paddy embankment upstream of the reservoir, and to have been moved to its present location in 1956 when that area was submerged. The whole figure is carved from a single stone, and the portion below the ankles is buried in the ground. The square face, with full cheeks, has a small nose and mouth set slightly toward the centre. The ears are adorned with earrings, and the neck bears three carved lines, the folds conventionally shown on the necks of Buddhist images. The tips of the hair have been slightly cut away; because the top of the head is flat, with a hole at its centre, it appears that a crown was originally fitted there. The right hand is shown with the palm facing outward and the fingertips pointing upward, while the left hand also shows its palm, but with the fingertips pointing downward. The robe draped over both shoulders hangs in a U-shape from the chest to the abdomen, and below the abdomen, at the thighs, it divides into a Y-shape. This bodhisattva image is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period, and is regarded as important material for examining one school of bodhisattva sculpture in the Wonju region.
