Standing Sejeon-ri Stone Buddha
세전리석불입상 · 細田里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue was excavated from the hill behind Sejeon-ri, Songdong-myeon, Namwon, Jeonbuk State; its total height is 2.7 m. Whereas other stone Buddhas are usually carved into boulders or rock faces, this one is unusual in taking the form of a separate, freestanding stone image. It is made of granite and stands on a double pedestal carved with a lotus design. With both hands tucked into the sleeves and folded across the chest, it looks at first glance rather like a statue of Bodhidharma. Given the smooth, gentle lines and unadorned form of the carving, it is presumed to be a work of the early Goryeo period. According to tradition, a temple once stood here in the distant past, but only the stone Buddha now remains. The exact date when this standing stone Buddha was enshrined here is not known in detail.
