This rock-carved image of Avalokitesvara is located at Anyangam Hermitage in Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and was made in 1909. A semicircular niche was cut into the rock to hold the statue, with the inscription "Gwaneumjeon" (Avalokitesvara Hall) carved at its centre and the Buddhist image carved within; the whole stands 3.53 m high. Octagonal pillars carved with lotus flowers stand to the left and right of the statue, giving the impression of a shrine building. The statue as a whole conveys a weighty, full-bodied impression; the carved lines are not very deep, but the posture is stable, and the broad, angular shoulders lend it a sense of mass. This style carries on the manner of the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, and is a fine example of the rock-carved Buddha style of the Seoul region in the late Joseon period.
