A budo, or stupa, symbolises the grave of a Buddhist monk, a place where the monk's remains or sari (relics) are enshrined. This stupa, standing within the grounds of Yeongdong Elementary School, is shaped overall like a lotus flower bud. It originally stood at the site of an old temple in Simwon-ri and was later moved to its present location. The stupa has a simple form: a square base stone carved with ansang (arch-shaped niche) motifs, topped with a lotus-shaped pedestal and a body stone shaped like a lotus bud. Not only is the body stone itself shaped like a lotus bud, but its entire surface is also densely carved with lotus petals. Judging from the ansang pattern on the base stone and the lotus-petal carving on the body stone, the stupa is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
