Seated Mongsan-ri Shakyamuni Buddha
몽산리석가여래좌상 · 夢山里釋迦如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Seated Mongsan-ri Shakyamuni Buddha stands at the site of the former Juksa Temple, at the foot of Cheonggyesan Mountain in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and is 1.03 m tall in total. The robe covers both shoulders, and the Buddha sits with both feet raised onto the knees so that the soles face upward. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing to the ground, while the left hand rests on the left knee with the palm turned upward. Behind the statue is a boat-shaped halo decorated with flame patterns, within which the head halo and the body halo are divided by two thick lines. Layered lotus flowers are carved on the head halo, and on either side, where the head halo meets the body halo, flying celestial beings are carved above cloud patterns. The halo clearly displays the carving technique of the Unified Silla period. On the lower part of the pedestal, downward-facing lotus petals are carved, and on the upper part, fully bloomed lotus petals are carved. The lotus design consists of layered petals with leaves set between them, which likewise well illustrates the characteristic pedestal decoration of the Unified Silla period.
