Seonunsabaekpayulsa Temple Stele
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele, erected to honour the achievements of the monk Baekpa Yulsa, stands in a stupa field in the woods to the right just inside the entrance to Seonunsa Temple. It was built in 1858, the ninth year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, and its inscription is in the hand of Kim Jeong-hui, the celebrated calligrapher of the Joseon dynasty known by his pen name Chusa. Despite Joseon's policy of suppressing Buddhism, Baekpa Yulsa emerged from a long period of decline to spark a fresh current in late Joseon Buddhism as head of the Hwaeom school, and this stele records his achievements. It consists of a body set upon a square base and capped with a roof-shaped stone.
