Seated Boseong Banseok-ri Stone Buddha
보성반석리석불좌상 · 寶城盤石里石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands in Banseok-ri, Bongnae-myeon, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do; it is 2.22 m tall in total, with a halo 1.36 m wide. A natural rock was shaped into a boat form and the Buddha was carved onto it. The large, round face gives a solemn yet rustic, folk impression, and behind the head is a round halo carved with a lotus design. The robe is draped over the left shoulder only, and the folds rising from the chest to the left shoulder are simplified and loose. The large hands hang down below the knees in an unusual posture, with the palm of the left hand facing outward and that of the right hand facing inward. The work illustrates one facet of a localised, folk style of Buddhist sculpture.
