Seated Cheongnim-ri Stone Buddha
청림리석불좌상 · 靑林里石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Seated Cheongnim-ri Stone Buddha stood at a site known as the former grounds of Cheongnimsa Temple and has since been moved to the grounds of Gaeamsa Temple. The head and body of this seated stone Buddha had originally become separated and were only restored in recent times. The hood covering the head hangs down long over the shoulders and back. The hands are placed with the left over the right, the thumbs of both hands extended straight and touching, the joined palms cradling a round jewel, showing that the image represents Jijang Bosal, the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. A natural stone serves as the base, on which sits an octagonal pedestal carved with downward-facing lotus petals. Above this is a low, drum-shaped stone bearing no pattern, and at the very top a pedestal carved in the form of a fully opened lotus flower, which is currently upside down. Judging by the overall carving technique, the work is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
