Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are relics of State Councillor Hwang Hui from the early Joseon period: a pair of jade paperweights (okseojin), a coral hat string, a jade inkstone, a belt of rhinoceros horn (seogakdae), and a property-division document (bunjae document). Hwang Hui (1363–1452), whose pen name was Bangchon, passed the civil service examination in 1389, the first year of King Gongyang of Goryeo. From 1431 to 1449 he served as Chief State Councillor (Yeonguijeong), assisting King Sejong the Great in governing the state, and even after retiring from office he continued to exert influence by advising King Sejong on important affairs. He directed the development of the Four Districts and Six Garrisons, the improvement of diplomacy and institutions, and the promotion of culture, contributing to the age of peace and prosperity under King Sejong, and he is praised as the greatest chief minister of the Joseon Dynasty. In 1500, the sixth year of Yeonsangun's reign, the property-division document specified that paddy and dry fields were granted to his son Sa-ung, and that certain treasures, including the coral hat string and the jade inkstone, were to be kept by the head family.
