The Nanseolheonsijip is a collection of some 210 works by Heo Nanseolheon (1563–1589), one of the representative female poets of the Joseon dynasty; it was printed from woodblocks by her younger brother Heo Gyun, the author of The Tale of Hong Gildong. Heo Nanseolheon's given name was Cho-hui, Nanseolheon being her pen name. Her father Heo Yeop and her brothers Heo Seong, Heo Bong and Heo Gyun were a family so renowned for literary talent that they were called the "Five Literary Masters of Chodang." In 1589, the 22nd year of King Seonjo, Heo Gyun, then twenty-seven years old, gathered the manuscripts left by his sister Heo Nanseolheon, who had died young, and edited them into the Nanseolheon-go. It contains fifteen five-character old-style poems, eight seven-character old-style poems, eight five-character regulated poems, thirteen seven-character regulated poems, twenty-four five-character quatrains and 142 seven-character quatrains, together with an appendix comprising the "Sangnyangmun for the White Jade Pavilion of Gwanghanjeon," the "Hanjeong-iljeop," the "Preface to a Dream Journey to Gwangsang" and one further five-character old-style poem. There is no publication record, so the exact date the book was printed is unknown, but on the evidence of Heo Gyun's colophon it is presumed to have been published in 1608, the 41st year of King Seonjo.
