Standing Rock-carved Buddha in Sagok-ri, Jincheon
진천 사곡리 마애여래입상 · 鎭川 沙谷里 磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha, standing a total of 7.5 m high, is located in Sagok-ri, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. One face of a large boulder was dressed to form an enormous halo enveloping the whole body, and the Buddha was carved within it. A hole pierced through the front suggests that a wooden shelter for housing the statue originally stood there. The face has the composed look of a monk, and the neck clearly bears three carved lines, known as samdo, the traditional marks symbolising the Buddha's attainment. The robe draped over both shoulders falls in a U-shaped line, and the left arm, among other areas, is finely creased with closely spaced folds. Together with the distinctive halo, the somewhat formulaic rendering of the robe folds reflects the stylisation characteristic of Buddhist statues of the Goryeo period. Carrying on the rock-carved Buddha style of the late Silla period, it is an accomplished example of Goryeo-period work.
