Birojeon Hall of Gagyeonsa Temple, Goesan
괴산 각연사 비로전 · 槐山 覺淵寺 毘盧殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBirojeon Hall is a Buddhist hall enshrining a statue of Vairocana Buddha; here is enshrined the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha (Treasure No. 433). The building stands on a low platform facing due south, and its foundation stones are original Silla-period stones reused in the present structure. Round columns rise from these stones, each given a slight swelling at the middle. The building measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and its roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof, whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (eight). It is built in the dapo bracket style, in which the bracket sets supporting the eaves are placed not only above the columns but also between them. Birojeon Hall of Gagyeonsa Temple is a late-Joseon building, restrained and elegant overall, and it clearly displays the building techniques of its period.
