A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local residents. The Suncheon Local Confucian School was established in Seongdong-ri in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong, but was relocated in 1550. After it burned down during the Japanese invasions, it was rebuilt at its present site in 1801, the first year of King Sunjo. The ritual space centred on Daeseongjeon Hall, the shrine hall, and the learning space centred on Myeongnyundang Hall, the lecture hall, are set on sloping ground. The Oesammun outer gate and Myeongnyundang stand at the front, while the Naesammun inner gate and Daeseongjeon stand behind them, all arranged in a straight line, following the typical hyanggyo layout of placing the learning space in front and the shrine behind. During the Joseon period, the state granted land, servants and books so that students could be taught here, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 the school's educational function ceased, and only the spring and autumn memorial rites continue today. The books kept here are valuable material for the study of Confucian schools and local history in the late Joseon period.
