Seated Rock-carved Buddha in Sambang-ri, Goesan

This is a Buddha statue located in Sambang-ri, Buljeong-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, shown seated on a low lotus-flower pedestal. Atop the bare head is a large, topknot-shaped usnisha, and the neck bears three clearly incised curved lines, known as samdo. The figure has a neat, compact build; the body shows no modelling of musculature, and the robe covering both shoulders, with a few simplified folds, is rendered in line alone. The right hand rests on the knee, while the left hand forms a distinctive gesture in front of the chest. Though the schematic treatment of the lotus petals reveals certain technical limitations, and traces of an earlier period's style can still be seen, the work is regarded as an outstanding example of Goryeo-period sculpture.
