Byeongyeongseonghonggyo Bridge
병영성홍교 · 兵營城虹橋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis area was where the Naval and Army Commander of Jeolla Province was stationed, a military stronghold established in 1417, the seventeenth year of King Taejong. A bridge was built across the stream called Kkachinae to connect with the garrison, and because its shape curved like a rainbow, forming a half-moon, it was called Honggyo, meaning "rainbow bridge". A story is handed down that the Honggyo Bridge of Byeongyeongseong was built under the supervision of a man named Yang Han-jo, to commemorate a love that crossed the barrier of social status between a slave and the daughter of a yangban (noble) family, and the return of their son after he received a high government post. Today only the arched section retains its original form, but the bridge remains an outstanding relic showing the advanced state of local architecture in the late Joseon period.
