The Sinchang-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda is a late Goryeo-period pagoda restored in 1991 by gathering pagoda components that had been scattered across the site of a temple presumed to be Bongguksa Temple. Standing about 2.18 m tall, it has a three-storey body set on a two-tier base. Only some components of the lower tier survive; corner pilasters (uju) and a central pilaster (taengju) are carved in relief at the corners and centre of the body stones. The upper tier is made of broad slab stones for its body stones, with corner pilasters carved at the corners but no central pilaster. The cover stone has hip-ridge lines carved at its four corners and forms a gently sloping rain-drip surface. Corner pilasters are also carved on the pagoda body; during the restoration work a circular reliquary hole that had once enshrined sari (Buddhist relics) was found on the upper surface of the first-storey body stone. The roof stones, the stones that cap a pagoda or stone lantern like a roof, have only four tiers of stepped supports on their underside, fewer than in Unified Silla pagodas, so they are thinner and their rain-drip slope is gentle. Along the eaves line, the corners turn up only very slightly. The finial does not survive. During the Goryeo period, as the construction of stone pagodas increased, single-tier bases became the fashion, so the fact that the Sinchang-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda was built with a double-tier base provides important material for studying Goryeo-period stone pagodas in the Gyeonggi region. The stone-dressing technique of the base and the diminished detailing of the roof stones suggest that it was made in the late Goryeo period.
