King Taejo Pavilion King Placenta Chamber
태조대왕 태실 · 太祖大王 胎室

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site where the placenta of King Taejo (Yi Seong-gye), founder of Joseon, was enshrined. It was originally located at Yongyeon in Hamgyeong-do, but in 1393, the second year of King Taejo, it was moved to what was then Jindong-hyeon in Wanju County, Jeolla-do — present-day Majeon-ri, Chubu-myeon, Geumsan County. The placenta chamber underwent several repairs and renovations. In 1928, during the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese Government-General damaged the placenta chamber and removed the placenta jar to Changdeokgung Palace; in 1993, local residents retrieved the remaining stone monument and stone furnishings and restored them at the present site. The front of the stone monument bears the inscription "Taejo daewang taesil" ("Placenta Chamber of King Taejo the Great"), and the back records the date of its reconstruction, in 1689.
