Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are old documents handed down in the family of Yi Yu-gil, a military official who was active during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War). When his father Yi Seon-gyeong died fighting the Japanese invaders, Yi Yu-gil, at the age of eighteen, joined the forces of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and distinguished himself at the Battle of Myeongnyang, for which he was appointed to a ninth-grade office; when reinforcements were requested from Ming China, he served as a right-wing commander and distinguished himself again before dying in battle. In recognition of these merits he was posthumously promoted in rank during the reign of King Sunjo and was even granted the posthumous title "Chungui" (Loyalty and Righteousness). He is also enshrined together with Admiral Yi Sun-sin at Yongjeongsa Shrine. The documents comprise eleven royal edicts concerning Yi Yu-gil and his wife, two concerning his son Yi U-in and his wife, three concerning his grandson Yi Seok-go and his wife, and three concerning his great-grandson Yi Jing-guk and his wife; they are old documents recording the honours bestowed on the Yi Yu-gil family and the special royal favours granted to his descendants.
