Standing Seosan Yeomi-ri Stone Buddha
서산여미리석불입상 · 瑞山余美里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands in Yeomi-ri, Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. It was found in the 1970s during improvement works on the Yongjangcheon stream, 1 km from its present site, and was moved here afterwards. According to local tradition, two Buddha statues once stood about 5 km upstream on the same stream, and one of them is said to have floated down to where this one was found, though this is not confirmed. The face and the backs of the hands are carved in granite, but rough chisel marks remain on the sides and back, and the neck, once broken, has been reattached. The trapezoidal face wears a crown into which a small Buddha has been carved, though it is badly worn. Just below the face, three lines carved to represent the samdo, the three folds symbolising the three stages of worldly affliction in Buddhist teaching, hang down like a necklace, and the robe drapes from the left shoulder in a stylised semicircular sweep. The left hand is raised while the right is held low in a supporting gesture. The overall carving is formulaic and lacks a sense of volume, suggesting that this is a Buddha statue that had become provincialised in style by the Goryeo period.
