No Cathedral
노성당 · 老星堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNo Cathedral stands at the entrance to Impi Hyanggyo, a local Confucian school, and is the place where Confucian scholars of Impi enshrined the memorial tablets of successive local magistrates and held a memorial rite once a year. The scholars also gathered here in their leisure time to enjoy poetry and song. According to an inscription on the central ridge beam, the building was constructed in the sixth year of King Cheoljong's reign (1855). It has six bays across the front and three bays on the side, and is roofed in the hip-and-gable style, its sides forming the shape of the character 八 (meaning eight). Among the stepping stones used at the building, two members that had originally formed part of a pagoda have been found, and among the school's auxiliary buildings, one roof capstone (okgaeseok) from a pagoda has been used as a foundation stone. Part of another roof capstone is likewise used as a foundation stone at the house of Jin Pyeong-ho. This bears out the record in the Impi-eupji (Gazetteer of Impi), which states that a five-storey and a four-storey stone pagoda once stood here but no longer exist. In the courtyard stand two civil-official stone statues (munin-seok), similar in form to the usual type but with their eyes carved protruding, giving them a humorous look.
