Hwaeomsagucheungam Hermitage Stone Lantern
화엄사구층암석등 · 華嚴寺九層庵石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone lantern stands at Gucheungam Hermitage, a subsidiary hermitage of Hwaeomsa Temple. It is centred on the hwasaseok, the fire chamber that housed the light, below which is a base made up of three stones, and above which sit a roof stone and a finial. The octagonal lower base stone has an ansang (a decorative arch-shaped niche motif) carved on each face, with a lotus design encircling its upper surface. The square central pillar appears long and slender. The upper base stone is encircled by an eight-petalled lotus and has a single tier of supports on its underside. The octagonal fire chamber has windows set at four points. The roof stone's eight eaves curve gently and lift upward at each corner. At the top rests a round stone that appears to be a finial. Overall the lantern is octagonal in form, and judging from the style and technique of its various parts, such as the ansang niches and lotus decoration, it is presumed to have been made during the Unified Silla period.
