Seated Stone Buddha of Sahyeonsa Temple
사현사 석불좌상 · 沙峴寺 石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seated stone Buddha now stands at Sahyeonsa Temple in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. It originally stood at an earlier Sahyeonsa Temple in Hongje-dong, and was moved together with the temple when the temple itself relocated. Sahyeonsa Temple was founded in 1045, the eleventh year of King Jeongjong of Goryeo. Thought to represent Maitreya, the seated figure has an oval face, its right hand raised and its left hand resting on the knee, and sits in the full lotus position. The upper body is rendered elongated, while the lower body, at the knees, appears short and flat. Such features are found mainly in Buddha images of the early Joseon period, making this seated stone Buddha a valuable resource for the study of early Joseon Buddhist sculpture.
