Tapdong Yanggwan, Cheongju is a modern building in Tapdong, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, and the first Western-style building in Cheongju. A cradle of Christian culture in Chungcheongbuk-do during the enlightenment period at the end of the Korean Empire, it consists of six Western-style buildings (yanggwan) erected between 1906 and 1932 by missionaries of the American Northern Presbyterian Church — the first Western-style houses built anywhere in the Cheongju region. Around 1900 the Reverend F. S. Miller (Min No-a), a missionary of the American Northern Presbyterian Church, secured mission land in the Tapdong area of Cheongju and settled there with his wife, laying the groundwork for construction, and in 1906 Hall No. 4 of Tapdong Yanggwan was built. The Reverend Edwin Kagin then arrived and took overall charge of the administration of the building work, and in 1923 the Reverend J. S. Purdy (1923–1926) and his wife, together with several other missionaries, were stationed in the Cheongju area, serving as the central hub of Christian culture there. Up to 1932, missionary residences, a mission headquarters, a hospital and a Bible school were built, and the site was used as a base for local mission work and medical service. In the late Japanese colonial period and after liberation, missionaries including J. T. Underwood, Bruce F. Hunt (Han Bu-seon) and Minnie Dye (Do Min-hoe) lived there. Today the buildings stand on and around the grounds of Cheongju Ilsin Girls' High School: Hall 1 is used as a private residence, Hall 2 as the Seongseo Theological Institute, and Halls 3 to 6 as buildings of Ilsin Girls' High School. The six buildings of Tapdong Yanggwan, Cheongju hold important architectural-historical value, allowing us to trace the transitional style of architecture as it moved from traditional Korean building to modern construction.
