Seated Gurye Sado-ri Stone Buddha
구례사도리석불좌상 · 求禮沙圖里石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeated Gurye Sado-ri Stone Buddha stands in Sado-ri, Masan-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do; its head, which had become detached, has been reattached. Aside from some damage to part of the body and to the right cheek, the statue retains its original form relatively well. The nearly square face has large eyes, nose and mouth, and the build is dignified yet rendered with soft lines. The robe drapes over the left shoulder and falls across the arm and knee, its folds carved in soft curves. The octagonal pedestal on which the Buddha sits is divided into upper, middle and lower tiers, with lotus petals carved on the upper and lower tiers. The octagonal middle tier is currently detached and lies beside the statue. Judging from the carving technique, the statue is thought to date from the early Goryeo period.
