Standing Cheonseongsa Temple Stone Buddha
천성사석조여래입상 · 千聖寺石造如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOriginally found at the site of Seonghwagok Temple in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this statue was moved to Cheonseongsa Temple, where it is now kept; apart from the hands, which have been newly made, it survives in an almost complete state. The large, round topknot-shaped hair bun on the bare head, and the plump face with neat, compact features, reflect well the Buddha statue style of the late Unified Silla period. The rounded shoulders, narrow waist and plump legs convey a softness and a well-balanced sense of volume. This Silla character also appears in the way the robe is worn: it covers both shoulders and is rendered with a few simple, stepped folds. The collar, following the line of the neck, is turned back once with three lines, but since it completely covers both shoulders, this can be regarded as a more developed form. While the statue retains earlier features such as a head large in proportion to the body and a short lower body, it also shows schematic, formalised robe-fold lines, and is presumed to be a refined early Goryeo work that developed out of the Unified Silla tradition.
