Sunmyeong Stele Yugangwon Stone Furnishings
순명비 유강원 석물 · 純明妃 裕康園 石物

These are royal-tomb stone carvings remaining at the former site of Yugangwon, once the tomb of Empress Sunmyeonghyo, consort of Emperor Sunjong, the twenty-seventh and last king of Joseon. Empress Sunmyeonghyo, daughter of Min Tae-ho, was invested as crown princess consort but died in 1904, before Sunjong became emperor; her tomb was made at Yugangwon, and when Sunjong died in 1926 she was reinterred together with him at what is now Yureung Royal Tomb. Later, when Sunjong's second empress, Empress Sunjeonghyo, died, she too was interred there alongside them. At the former site of Yugangwon, some twenty stone furnishings that once stood around Empress Sunmyeonghyo's tomb still remain, including a stone lantern, civil official statues, and carved animal figures such as horses, sheep and tigers. These display exceptional craftsmanship and are important examples of royal stone sculpture from the end of the Joseon dynasty.
