Cheongwansa Temple Stone Lantern
천관사석등 · 天冠寺石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone lantern stands below Geungnakbojeon Hall at Cheongwansa Temple; every part except the base stone is octagonal. Centred on the fire-chamber stone that houses the light, it has a three-tiered pedestal below and a roof stone with a finial above. On the pedestal, symmetrical lotus patterns are carved into the upper and lower stones, with a pillar erected between them to form the middle support. The fire-chamber stone has windows pierced through it in four places to let the light spread out. The roof stone's eight corners curve up boldly, drawing a light, lively line at the eaves. At the top, a tall, bud-shaped finial rests on a thin support. A work of modest scale and elegant, refined technique, it is presumed to date from the late Unified Silla period.
