Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Eulchukgap Assembly Painting and the Jungnimgapgye Documents are a painting made to commemorate the sixtieth birthdays of the members of the Eulchukgapgye and the accompanying documents of that society. The Eulchukgapgye was a fellowship society formed in 1660, when eleven scholars from the Cheongju area who had been born in the eulchuk year of 1625, the third year of King Injo, turned thirty-six. The Eulchukgap Assembly Painting is a commemorative portrait painted in 1686, the 12th year of King Sukjong, when the members turned sixty-two; painted by the court painter Uiin, it shows seven of the society's members seated side by side against the backdrop of Bosalsa Temple in Cheongju, with their descendants standing before them. The society's documents include a record of the gapgye written by Byeon Suk, a colophon composed by Song Si-yeol, an account of the portrait written by Yi Hu-jik, and congratulatory verses. They consist of twelve articles of rules that the members were to observe, dealing mainly with mutual aid, such as visiting one another on the death of a parent or wife, and with the running of the society. Their descendants later carried on this fellowship and built Jungnim Yeongdang, a portrait shrine, in Bugil-myeon, Cheongwon-gun, North Chungcheong Province, but it was demolished in 1979 for the construction of an air force airfield; it was subsequently relocated to its present site at the foot of Maebongsan Mountain, where memorial rites are still held every spring and autumn.
