창원향교 대성전 · 昌原鄕校 大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local people. Changwonhyanggyo is said to have been founded in 1276, the second year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, but there is no firm evidence for this, and it is generally believed to have been established during the Joseon period. It is said to have originally stood in what is now Hapseong-dong in Masan, and to have been moved to its present site after the Japanese invasions of 1592. Within the grounds, the rear section contains the ritual space of Daeseongjeon Hall together with the eastern and western Seomu, while the front section contains Myeongnyundang, the space for study, the eastern and western dormitories where students lived, and Punghwaru Pavilion. Daeseongjeon Hall measures three kan across the front and four kan along the side, and has a gabled roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character 人 (person). It enshrines Confucius and the Five Sages of China. The eastern and western Seomu enshrine the Eighteen Sages of Korea, and memorial rites are held every year in February and August.
