Seated Uiseong Gwandeok-dong Stone Bodhisattva
의성관덕동석조보살좌상 · 義城觀德洞石造菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a bodhisattva image standing together with the three-story stone pagoda at Gwandeok-ri, Danchon-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it measures 98 cm in height. The head, which had been severed, has been set back in place, and the face is so badly worn that only the nose remains distinguishable; the eyes and mouth are too indistinct to allow the expression of the face to be read. A necklace, a U-shaped ornament, and bracelets appear before the chest, suggesting that the figure represents a bodhisattva. The oval face, the stability of the body, and the soft curves of its form show particularly well the characteristics of eighth-century Silla style. The carving is skilful, and the piece is valued as important material for the study of Silla-period Buddhist images.
