Seated Rock-carved Buddha on Imyeongsan Mountain, Hadong
하동 이명산 마애여래좌상 · 河東 理明山 磨崖如來坐像

This Buddha statue stands at Jikjeon-ri, Bukcheon-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do; the rock face was hollowed out to form a niche, within which the Buddha was then carved. The head is carved in high relief, while below the neck only a simple outline is rendered. The face is rounded, and although fine details have worn away and are no longer clear, the narrowly slit eyes and firmly closed mouth give the face a solemn expression. The right hand is raised, and the left arm is bent with the hand resting on the knee; the folds of the robe are carved in shallow lines across the whole body. Judging from its style, the work is presumed to date from the Unified Silla period.
