Geodongsa Temple is said to have been founded during the Silla period by the monk Uisang (625–702), and to have remained a major temple down to the Joseon period. It appears to have undergone repairs several times up to the late Joseon period. The Daeungjeon Hall of Geodongsa Temple, which enshrines the Buddha Sakyamuni, retains an old architectural style. However, all the coping stones of its stone platform have been lost, leaving only the stone steps with their side balustrades. Seen from the side, the roof is a gable roof shaped like the Chinese character for "person" (人), and the bracket sets made to support its weight are found both above the columns and in the spaces between them, in the dapo style. The brackets on the front are carved all over with floral patterns and are very ornate, while those on the rear are plain and unadorned, with no decorative elements. The lattice doors on the front are likewise decorated with floral patterns, and the overall colouring has an air of refinement.
