Standing Stone Buddha of Yonghwasa Temple, Jincheon
진천 용화사 석조여래입상 · 鎭川 龍華寺 石造如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a large stone Buddha standing 7 metres tall in Sinjeong-ri, Jincheon-eup, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The oval face bears a faint, gentle smile. Atop the head is a hat-like protrusion, which is thought to be a later alteration. On the neck are three carved lines known as samdo, a conventional mark on Buddhist images, and beneath them a necklace ornament is depicted, which together with the face gives the statue its distinctive appearance. The body forms a large rectangle with almost no sense of volume. The robe is draped over both shoulders, leaving the chest bare, and the lower body shows overlapping U-shaped folds. The right hand, held in front of the chest, and the left hand, holding a lotus flower against the abdomen, are both rendered small. The huge scale, the flat rectangular form, and the sparse rendering of detail are characteristic features of regionally styled Buddhist statues of the Goryeo period.
