Seated Stone Bodhisattva of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 석조보살좌상

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis bodhisattva statue was discovered about 300 years ago within the grounds of Yongmunsa Temple in Idong-myeon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is now coated in white plaster, so its original appearance cannot be seen in detail. The near-square face is full and rounded, though the eyes and mouth are small and the nose is quite large, giving it a somewhat formalised appearance. The elongated upper body and broad knees show a rich sense of volume and elasticity, indicating the high quality of the statue. The robe drapes down over both shoulders, its sash folds falling naturally in harmony with the figure's features. The left hand rests against the abdomen holding a vase, while the right hand is held at the chest, apparently once holding a lotus stem. The work displays the rounded, full features characteristic of the late Unified Silla period, and is presumed to date from the late Unified Silla to the early Goryeo period.
