This is a large-scale painting in the style of Chinese folk painting (minhwa), depicting individual scenes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms; each panel bears its title in the form of a horizontal plaque, making the content easy to follow. It consists of the following panels: "Zhuge Kongming's First Deployment of Troops", "Master Wolong Debates the Assembled Scholars", "Master Wolong Borrows Arrows by a Clever Ruse", "At the Altar of Utmost Sincerity, Zhuge Liang Prays for Wind", "Pang Shiyuan's Chain Stratagem", "The Fire at Wulin Puts Cao Cao to Flight", "General Zhang Defends the Walls of Yizhou", "Guan Xing Beheads an Enemy General to Rescue Zhang Bao", and "Master Wolong Sounds the Drums of Victory". Overall the folk-painting character is strong: on an unusually large canvas the composition makes frequent use of zigzag arrangements, conveying a dynamic sense of movement and the varied poses of its many figures. This work originally belonged to Dongmyo Shrine in Seoul (Treasure No. 142) and was made up of ten panels in total, of which nine survive today. Its value lies in the fact that its original place of keeping is clearly known, and that among folk paintings depicting the story of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms it is an outstanding example.
