This is the genealogy record (jokbo) of the Yeosan Song clan, published in 1653, the fourth year of King Hyojong of Joseon, by Song Hui-eop. The Yeosan Song clan genealogy was first compiled by Song Eon-sin in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo, and printed in a single volume at Cheongju in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun, by Song Il; it was later published again by Song Hui-eop. It records the clan from its founding ancestor, Song Yu-ik, down to the nineteenth generation, with two further volumes appended. Each page is divided into six vertical columns of entries; legitimate and illegitimate sons are distinguished, but sons and daughters are not separated, being recorded instead in order of birth. Descendants who took other surnames, such as the offspring of daughters, are recorded only down to the fourth generation. Almost no cases of adopted sons appear up to the fourteenth generation; only from the fourteenth generation onward are adoptions recorded. Recording family members in order of birth is a feature typical of early Joseon genealogies, showing that at this time the practice of passing inheritance solely to the eldest son had not yet become fully established; the genealogy also shows that the practice of taking in adopted sons began to appear from the seventeenth century onward. Given that almost no genealogies survive from before the seventeenth century, this genealogy, published in the 1600s, is a rare and valuable example.
