This bridge stood at the lower reaches of the Daecheon Stream and is said to have once been an important route linking Nampo and Boryeong. Over time it was gradually swept away by the current or damaged during river embankment works until only a small part remained; the remnants were recovered in 1978, and in 1992 they were moved to the bank of the Daecheon Stream, where part of the bridge was restored. The bridge is made of massive granite, apparently quarried from nearby Wangdaesan Mountain and transported by raft. The piers supporting the body of the bridge each consist of two or three roughly dressed stones stacked together, with six piers in all arranged irregularly. Broad, flat slabs were laid across the piers to complete the bridge; although it is said to have originally had twelve bays, it is estimated to have had at least twenty-two. The bridge sits quite low, so that it was submerged whenever the tide came in or floods occurred, and even in ordinary times it was occasionally submerged. Records such as the Dongguk Yeoji, the Sinan Eupji and the Yeojidoseo indicate that the bridge had already been built by at least the eighteenth century. A local culture festival is held every year in Boryeong, at which many citizens take part in the Twelve-Bay Stone Bridge Treading Ritual and in bridge-treading more generally.
