Standing Buyeo Hongsansangcheon-ri Rock-carved Buddha
부여홍산상천리마애불입상 · 扶餘鴻山上川里磨崖佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis rock-carved Buddha is carved into a rock face on the northern hillside below the summit of Taebongsan Mountain, in Hongsan-myeon, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The statue is 6 m in total height and was carved on a single flat surface, which leans forward by about 10 degrees. The head is bare, with a large topknot-shaped bun rising above it. The face is round and broad, the eyes are narrowly closed, the lips are thick, and the ears hang down long. On the neck are three carved lines, known as samdo, symbolising the three stages of existence — a feature that clearly reflects the characteristics of Goryeo-period Buddhist statues. The robe draped over the left shoulder bears a distinctive butterfly-shaped knotted sash. The face is large and imposing in proportion to the body, and the left hand is held at the chest with the palm facing outward. This statue, which appears to have been an object of folk worship, is a rare example in the Buyeo region. It is relatively well preserved and is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
