Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krKim Gwan was a ninth-generation descendant of General Kim Chwi-ryeo of the Goryeo period. He passed the lower civil service examination (samasi) in 1447, the 29th year of King Sejong, and the special state examination (jeunggwang mungwa) in 1451, the first year of King Munjong, going on to serve as a copyist at the Office of Diplomatic Correspondence (Seungmunwon), an assistant section chief at the Board of Punishments, and a section chief at the Board of War. When Yi Si-ae's rebellion broke out in 1467, the 13th year of King Sejo, he distinguished himself in suppressing it and was honoured as a Jeokgae Meritorious Subject, a title granted for putting down the revolt. He later served as governor of Gangwon-do, Chungcheong-do, Hwanghae-do, Yeongan-do (present-day Hamgyeong-do) and Jeolla-do provinces. The portrait, enshrined in the Yeongjeonggak portrait hall, measures 88 cm wide and 154 cm high, with the figure itself 139 cm tall. Painted in the style of the early Joseon period, the face is coloured in a light orange-flesh tone with the outlines drawn in brown, and the lips are rendered in red rouge. While the lines of the face are soft curves, the robes are depicted with straight lines, as if starched.
