This is a relic of Sin Malju, a civil official of the reign of King Sejong of Joseon, in the form of a cheop (album) recording matters relating to a gye (mutual aid society). He passed the civil service examination during the reign of King Danjong and became a Gwonjijeongja, a junior court post. During the reign of King Sejo, after his elder brother Sin Suk-ju took part in the deposition of King Danjong, Sin Malju declined office and retired to Sunchang, where he built a pavilion called Guiraejeong and lived in seclusion, enjoying the surrounding landscape. In his later years he formed a gye with ten elders all over the age of seventy, naming it the Sipnogye (Society of Ten Elders), and had ten albums made, one for each member to keep; it is presumed that only one of these now survives. This album totals 420 characters, recording the reasons for forming the gye, its purpose, character and activities. It also includes portraits of the ten elders, followed by a record, for each individual, of his character and thought, together with quatrains embodying the precepts of the society.
